Battery Operated Power Tools
Q: My son and daughter-in-law just purchased their first home. Between the repair and maintenance requirements pointed out in the home inspection (thanks for that!), and their renovation plans, it appears that they are going to be very busy for the next several years. To help get them started, I’d like to buy them some tools as a house-warming present. Do you have any suggestions?

A: Completing projects in and around your home can be very satisfying. It can also be challenging and, sometimes, frustrating. Having the right tools for the task at hand will increase the likelihood of a successful outcome.
I suggest that you visit a few home improvement stores and look at the wide variety of battery operated power tools. The battery technology in the past few years has developed to the point that these tools are a practical alternative to the corded models that require you to pack around an extension cord and find a convenient electrical outlet. All of the major tool manufacturers produce their own versions of them, and the batteries are typically interchangeable (within each brand). Some of them also have garden tools that use the same batteries. They can be purchased individually or in sets, depending on your needs and budget. I suggest that, in addition to speaking to the stores’ salespeople, you check online reviews before purchasing.
Please congratulate your son and daughter-in-law on the purchase of their new home and remind them to call their home inspector should they have any technical questions as they embark on their home ownership adventure.
Regards, James
